Career Opportunities History majors examine the causes, contexts, and chronologies of historical events to understand how human experiences have both remained the same and changed over time. A student studying history develops a greater understanding and appreciation of today's culture and civilizations. Historians research, analyze, and interpret the past. They use many sources of information in their research, including newspapers and other periodicals, photographs, interviews, film, government and institutional records, and personal diaries and letters. Historians usually specialize in a specific country or region; a particular time period; or a particular field such as social, political, religious or women's history . An advanced degree may be required for certain occupations. Though education is the most common occupation associated with majoring in history, graduates develop many skills that can be used in a variety of occupational settings to include business, non-profit organizations, and government. History graduates are employed as educators, archivists, librarians, researchers, museum curators, journalists, consultants, lawyers, political consultants, foreign service workers, and preservation specialists to name a few.
