English from Cottey College is a Campus Associate English degree that prepares you for a Liberal Arts career. Cottey's English Department offers courses in writing and literature that recognize the integral relationship among thinking, reading and writing. Cottey believes written communication is a cornerstone of a liberal arts education and requires six hours of English Composition for graduation. Department highlights include the development of student portfolios that exhibit the acquisition of skills and techniques, the use of writers' groups to create an environment in which students learn from one another as well as their professors, and student writing consultants trained by faculty to provide additional assistance in development and revision of writing assignments. Career Opportunities English majors read, discuss, and write about literature. They study the critical, historical, linguistic, and cultural contexts of literary works. In addition, students practice writing and develop language-use and composition skills. Though education and law are the most common occupations associated with majoring in English , graduates develop skills that can be used in business and industry, non-profit organizations, and government. The ability to write well and read critically extends to all disciplines and complements careers in journalism, radio, television, advertising, publishing, public relations, business, the sciences, the fine arts and the ministry, to name just a few career areas.
