The program has the flexibility to provide a general education in theatre arts or entirely specialized training in acting, directing, technical theatre, theatre studies, or playwriting. Above all, the Cornell theatre major is a student who possesses a well-rounded knowledge of all aspects of the theatre. A diverse range of courses is available. General survey courses offer introductions to the theatre world, theatre management , and text analysis for production. Theatre studies courses are extensive and allow the student to explore classical Greek and Roman theatre, centuries of English and American drama, German drama, Russian drama, Japanese theatre, world theatre, the female dramatic tradition, dramaturgy and dramatic criticism, and modern and contemporary theatre, to name a few topics. Courses in acting, directing, and playwriting take students from the basics through more advanced studies in voice and speech, movement, and modern performance problems. Frequent workshops by guest artists and Resident Professional Teaching Associates (RPTAs) supplement established courses with instruction in such practical areas as audition techniques, stage combat, and the business of theatre. The RPTA program brings a group of working actors to the Center as mentors who share their insights and experiences in theatre. Those students interested in ?behind the scenes? aspects of theatre will also find a wide range of offerings. Classes in scenery, costumes, lighting, sound, and stage management are designed to motivate students to develop their own unique creative process while emulating practices most commonly used in the profession.
