The Field of Design and Environmental Analysis has two major areas of study: interior design, concentrating on the creation of interior spaces and associated products; and human environment relations, which focuses on ergonomics, facility planning and management, environmental psychology, and housing. The M.A. (interior design) and the M.S. (human environment relations) degrees are for students who want to develop an area of specialization culminating in a written research thesis. Interior design is a second professional degree program. Its areas of specialization include design history, design and leadership, design education, special populations, sustainable design, and CAD. The focus is on satisfying human needs in interior settings, and on developing and testing new design methods, design history, theory and criticism, and historic preservation. Applied research in human environment relations is concerned with applying knowledge from environmental psychology and human factors to such problems as housing for the elderly and persons with disabilities, the design of children's environments, the environment of poverty and environmentally induced stress. Facilities planning and management serves students from a wide range of undergraduate majors. The program emphasizes strategic workplace planning and the planning, design, and management of innovative workplace strategies. Human factors and ergonomics is the study of indoor air pollution; lighting; the design of offices to improve individual usability; sustainability; and universal design issues.
