Fine Art Bachelor from Corcoran College of Art and Design details

Program Format: Campus Program Level: Bachelor

Fine Art from Corcoran College of Art and Design is a Campus Bachelor Fine Art degree that prepares you for a Art and Design career. Fine Art majors enjoy both the freedom to work independently across disciplines and media, and a mentoring-style approach, through which faculty work closely with students in the development of their technical skills and creative thinking. The curriculum challenges students to respond critically and effectively to works of art and individual artistic practices, including their own. Students are encouraged to define their own practice in terms of growing understandings of art history, theories of representation, criticism and contemporary modes of art making. Emphasis is placed on developing an awareness of the relationships of art and expression, form and content, and imagery and ideas. Fine Art classes allow for interdisciplinary modes of working and exposure to many instructors, providing a healthy variety of feedback and wide array of expertise. The Corcoran is one of the very few colleges of art and design that has a world-class museum as its partner and Fine Art majors take full advantage of this relationship. Our faculty of distinguished practicing artists introduces students to the Museum's collection as well as many temporary exhibitions that range from the classic art of Western Europe, folk art and craft art, 19th century American paintings and modern art to 21st century painting, sculpture and new media. Visiting artists, museum curators, critics and art collectors are all part of the mix of art professionals on site that help make the Corcoran a vital center for making and responding to contemporary art. Your studies in the Fine Art Department are carefully constructed to give you the very best the Corcoran offers. The Sophomore year encourages diversity in the studio core curriculum experience rather than specialization. Students may choose from many studio electives to concentrate in any of six different media: Ceramics, Digital Media, Drawing, Painting, Printmaking and Sculpture. The Junior year offers depth of instruction, allowing you to find your own creative voice and hone your artistic tools to communicate your ideas. Through a high level of direction and guidance, Seniors will be prepared for navigating the world of gallery exhibition, among other careers in the arts, and making responsible use of art's great expressive power.
