Directed student teaching is arranged at The Charles Lea Center or in area public schools. In addition to the Teacher Education Program Goals and Objectives, the Mental Disabilities major is designed to help the prospective teacher reach the following specific goals and objectives. PROGRAM GOALS The goals of the Mental Disabilities program at Converse are to: 1. provide a thorough course of study in human growth and development; 2. develop skills in appropriate pedagogy and classroom management; and 3. promote a broad knowledge of the history, theory, and professional practices that are related to the educable mentally disabled. Converse students who complete a major in Mental Disabilities will be able to: 1. demonstrate their knowledge of the content in this field; 2. plan, implement, and assess instruction in simulated settings and in real classroom settings; 3. organize and manage effectively both resource and self-contained models of a preK-12 placement with the educable mentally disabled; and 4. demonstrate computer proficiency in instructional technology including the knowledge of skills, strategies, software and hardware to be used in classroom management and computer-assisted instruction.
