Our goal is to train graduates to master the core concepts in biology, exhibit excellent scientific reasoning skills, effectively communicate scientific information, demonstrate outstanding laboratory skills, and exhibit professional, ethical behavior. The major includes a well-rounded core biology curriculum to help students master a foundation of biological topics including cell biology, genetics, chemistry, molecular biology, ecology, evolutionary theory, scientific methodology, research techniques and much more. In addition to the core curriculum, students choose elective courses based on their career goals and interests. Nearly all of the biology courses have a laboratory component in which students actively engage with the material as well as sharpen their critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills. We also have a nearby research station where students and faculty engage in ecological and environmental research. Every biology major gains real-world experience in their field by completing either an on-campus research project or a relevant internship experience. There is currently on-campus research studying the link between Human Papilloma virus and breast cancer. We also have developed relationships with local biomedical/biotechnical companies and Northwestern College to support student research and attract underrepresented groups to the sciences.
