CAREER DESCRIPTION The Paraeducator Program prepares students to resolve everyday challenges and to professionally support teachers in planning, presenting and evaluating instruction and learning. The paraeducator's responsibilities may include the following: 1. Working under the supervision of a teacher. 2. Assisting small group instruction in reading, math,spelling, etc. 3. Assisting individual students in the above academic areas and self-help skills, daily living skills, physical therapy and other skills depending on the functioning level of the student. 4. Following behavior programs as directed by the teacher . 5. Preparing and assembling materials. The particular responsibilities assigned to an assistant depend on the program and personnel in each school. Employment opportunities exist in Portland and in surrounding areas as a result of the present legislative support for equal education for students with special needs (IDEA). The Paraeducator Program is designed for persons of all ages, races, cultures and economic backgrounds. The program values and encourages diversity in the field of education. COURSE OF STUDY Education courses may be applied to the 90 credit hours required for an Associate of General Studies degree. CGCC offers a 51 credit hour certificate with emphasis on field experience in public or private elementary and secondary schools. The program has three goals: 1. To train students to work with special needs in an academic or vocational environment; 2. To allow students to progress toward teacher certification at a four-year institution; and 3. To provide exploratory experience for students who are considering regular education, English language learner education, or special education as a career.
