At least 12 hours of coursework must be in a cohesive area distinct from the main area of research. Two semesters of full-time residence on campus are also required. Doctoral students must pass a qualifying examination and a comprehensive examination and write and defend a dissertation. Usually students require a minimum of two years after the M.S. to finish a Ph.D. assuming that the M.S. was completed at Mines.
