Research The department offers graduate program in computer sciences concentration. Members of the department are actively involved in the Center for Wave Phenomena (CWP) and with the Center for Automation, Robotics and Distributed Intelligence (CARDI). These and other interdisciplinary activities give students many opportunities to participate in engineering and applied science projects on campus. Research is focused in the following areas: Sensor Networks Simulation Computer Vision and Image Processing Ad Hoc Networks Data Mining Applied Algorithms and Data Structures VLSI Design Automation Parallel Computing Computer Graphics Scientific Visualization Computer Aided Geometric Design Applications of Machine Learning Cognitive Modeling Doctor of Philosophy Mathematical and Computer Sciences This program requires 72 semester hours beyond the bachelor's degree , of which no fewer than 24 are thesis hours. At least 12 hours of course work must be in a cohesive area distinct from the main area of research. Two semesters of full-time residence on campus are also required. Doctoral students must pass a qualifying examination and a comprehensive examination and write and defend a dissertation. Usually students require a minimum of two years after the M.S. to finish a Ph.D. assuming that the M.S. was completed at Mines.
