Research focus has broadened over the years to include environmental research, materials science (including electronic materials, membranes, polymers and colloids), natural gas hydrates, separations technologies, theoretical and applied thermodynamics, theoretical fluid mechanics and rheology, combustion science, and computational methods and atomistic simulation. It includes 32 hours of coursework beyond the bachelor's degree , including a 12-hour core curriculum, a minimum of 12 hours in a minor discipline outside of chemical engineering and six hours of electives. All Ph.D. students must complete the same core courses as listed for the master of science degree. The program also requires passing a qualifying exam and Ph.D. proposal defense.
