Russian studies is a multifaceted discipline that aims to give students an understanding of Russia's history, politics, and culture, along with proficiency in the Russian language. Students can tailor their choice of courses to emphasize literature, film, sociology, history, environmental studies, or political science, taking advantage of a diversity of faculty expertise on Russia within and outside the department that makes Colgate unusual among institutions of its size. Prospective concentrators, and those with an interest in Russian language, should begin RUSS 101 as soon as possible. The department makes use of innovative web-based and computer technologies (such as the MANNA program developed jointly by faculty in Russian and computer science) to complement intensive in-class instruction across our range of introductory to advanced language courses. The department also offers a variety of literature and film courses at the 200 and 300 levels, along with accompanying FLAC (Foreign Languages across the Curriculum) sections for advanced Russian students.
