Teacher Preparation: Math and Science in Middle Schools from City Colleges of Chicago - Harry S Truman College is a Campus Associate Junior High Intermediate Middle School Education and Teaching degree that prepares you for a Education career. There is a shortage of middle school math and science teachers in Illinois. To address this lack, the NEIU Partnership (Northeastern Illinois University, Truman College, and Wright College) has designed a sequence of integrated, linked, math and science courses for students preparing to be math and/or science teachers in elementary schools, particularly in grades 6 through 9. By taking these classes as part of their preparation for Elementary Teacher Certification, students will receive in addition to a Bachelor's Degree: 1. Field experiences in schools both at the community college and university levels 2. Endorsements in math, science, and middle school teaching making them highly qualified in all three areas. Students with an interest in math and science, who plan to pursue an Elementary Education major at NEIU only, will be able to declare the linked courses in this sequence as their concentration. Upon graduation from NEIU's College of Education, these students will be prepared to secure an interesting teaching position and to be a leader in the math- and science-teaching fields. About the Program Why should YOU consider this sequence? Students will be "highly" qualified to teach math and science in the middle schools , according to "No Child Left Behind" requirements. There is a tremendous shortage of trained middle school teachers especially in math and science; thus, they are in high demand. Learning is hands-on and in smaller, personal settings. Instructors use state-of-the-art teaching and technology. Students will experience methods in the college classroom to use in the middle schools . The courses are linked and collaboratively taught by professors from the 3 colleges; students from all 3 colleges are in the same classes. Who should take these classes? Any future teacher who: Is interested in teaching middle school (6th through 9th grades) math and science; Wants to be well-prepared in math and/or science; Wants to understand the relationship between math and science; Wants to be prepared to do team teaching and interdisciplinary teaching; Is pursuing coursework towards an Illinois Elementary Education Certificate; and Anticipates completing elementary education coursework at NEIU's College of Education . (Other colleges in Illinois have agreed to accept these courses.) Program Courses The following classes must be taken together. They are linked and integrated; sometimes it is difficult to determine when one class stops and the other begins. The pairs are not sequential and will be offered in a rotation at the three institutions.
