Emergency Medical Technician from Citrus College is a Campus Associate Medical Emergency degree that prepares you for a Healthcare career. The Citrus College Emergency Medical Technician class can provide you with the skills and training necessary to work in the growing health care field as an EMT-B. The Emergency Medical Technician-Basic class integrates anatomy and physiology with basic life support skills, trauma care, expanded scope of practice, emergency vehicle operations and professional behavior. The student will have real experience in a local emergency department and in an ambulance. They will qualify for the Los Angeles County and National Registry Certification. While at the scene of an emergency , during transport of the sick or injured, or during a rescue situation, the emergency medical technician may render basic life support and first aid to a patient. EMTs can work for an ambulance service, a hospital emergency department, a search and rescue agency, a clinic, or an ambulatory care facility. EMT's provide care to the sick and injured under emergency and non-emergency conditions. The EMT-Basic has the emergency skills to assess a patient's condition and manage respiratory, cardiac and trauma emergencies. EMT's maintain a vareity of specialized equipment. drive ambulances, lift and carry patients up and down stairs, and communicate orally and in writing to other health care professionals. Most EMT's work 8, 10, 12, 24 or 48 hour shifts, often having several days off. This is not only physically strenuous but often it can be stressful, sometimes involving life or death situations and suffering patients. None the less, many people find the work exciting and challenging and enjoy the opportunity to help others. Characteristics Required Ability to: Give and receive verbal and written instructions and communicate in English with the patient, bystanders, and other members of the EMS system. Visualize objects from pictures, drawings and descriptions; as well as read and properly interpret written instructions, policies and protocols. Exhibit physical coordination and the ability to kneel, lift, carry up to 125 pounds, climb, stoop and extricate the patient. Possess manual dexterity to use all EMS equipment; demonstrate selfconfidence, emotional stability, and be able to remain in control in stressful situations. Lead and work with people under emergency or crisis situations; demonstrate self-directed behavior; control the scene; organize bystanders and deliver proper, prioritized care rapidly and efficiently.
