The Bachelor of Arts in Psychology emphasizes integrating and applying scientific methodology to the study of human behavior. Students develop an approach to learning that combines empirical, objective methodology, statistical techniques, and theoretical analysis of human behavior. Graduates are expected to have the knowledge and data analysis skills that would support graduate study in any of the specialty areas of psychology. They will be well prepared for employment in positions requiring understanding and motivation of others. Examples of such employment include positions in personnel work, social services, and mental health agencies, law enforcement, and sales. The Psychology Department offers internships in several diverse areas. In concert with the Charleston Police Department, we offer an internship in Law Enforcement. We also offer an internship in corrections in conjunction with the Department of Probation and Parole. Both internships offer students interested in law enforcement the opportunity to get real world experience in these areas. In conjunction with the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), we offer an internship in Experimental Psychology. Students work closely with MUSC mentors on projects in the area of Neuroscience (e.g., studying the effects of alcohol on the behavior of non-primate animals). The Department of Psychology and the Charleston Disabilities Board also coordinate an internship called the Buddy Program.
