The Wood Technics program is designed for those who wish to pursue a career in the light building construction industry as a contractor owner, coordinator, foreman, rough framer, trim carpenter, sales, or other related fields. Instruction is centered around the construction industry with primary emphasis on residential carpentry. Specific areas of instruction for first semester include: construction safety, construction concepts, blueprint reading, materials and fasteners, rough framing, stair systems, roof framing, and roofing. Second semester areas of instruction include: estimating residential construction, construction planning, doors and windows, insulation, exterior finish, interior finish, and cabinet installation. The course includes the construction of a full-scale home on an actual job site. You will build an interesting, high-quality home under the close supervision of an experienced instructor who possesses an extensive background in the construction industry. Additional lab activities include mock-up development, shed challenge, and site development. The experience gained through this program is designed to help you enter the construction field as a carpenter, to gain the necessary experience to become a site foreman, coordinator, contractor owner, or work in one of several other construction-related occupations.
