The purpose of this program is to prepare reflective practitioners to work with English language learners in multicultural environments. The program is designed to prepare teachers for bilingual elementary or secondary classrooms to: Continually evaluate the effects of their choices and actions on others and who actively seek out opportunities to grow professionally. Understand and use a variety of instructional strategies to encourage students' development of critical thinking, problem solving and performance skills. Understand how students differ in their approaches to learning and create instructional opportunities that are adapted to diverse learners. Understand and use formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and ensure the intellectual and social development of the learner. Foster relationships with colleagues, parents, and agencies in the larger community to support students' learning and well being. General Requirements for Admission Students must meet the general requirements for admission to the graduate program. In addition, applicants must submit: 1) a written recommendation from their school principal; 2) a copy of their initial or standard teaching certificate; and 3) a copy of their transitional (Type 29) teaching certificate. If the applicant does not possess an initial or standard teaching certificate, he/she must meet requirements for admission to the College of Education and admission o a master's degree program for initial certification, including submitting proof of successful completion of Illinois Certification Test of Basic Skills. Specific Requirements The M.S.Ed. in Bilingual Education can only be awarded to candidates who: 1) have earned a 3.0 or above G.P.A. in all required and elective courses.; 2) offer proof of a minimum of two years of full-time teaching experience; 3) successfully complete written and oral comprehensive examinations; 4) successfully complete a professional portfolio; and 5) complete all requirements within six years.
