African American Studies from Chicago State University is a Campus Bachelor African American degree that prepares you for a Liberal Arts career. The African American Studies Department in the College of Arts and Sciences offers a Bachelor of Arts degree and a minor in African- American Studies. It has as the center of its mission the goal of empowering students by expanding their African and African-American cultural knowledge base. The African and Black intellectual heritage is used as the primary vehicle for contextualizing each student's learning experience. Black cultural and intellectual contributions to the development of global civilization are also key components of the pedagogical objectives of the department. Interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary in its course offerings and in the focus of individual courses, the African-American Studies Department aims to educate students to function positively in a pluralistic world community with the understanding that the effectiveness of diversity and plurality is totally dependent upon each individuals self-esteem, self-confidence and self-knowledge. The rigor and interdisciplinary nature of the department's requirements prepare students for careers in law, education, criminal justice, international affairs, business, publishing, journalism as well as graduate programs in various liberal arts disciplines and career-track internships with various hotel chains and nationally known retail stores.
