The Graphic Arts/Publishing course is designed to provide the students with a foundation of technical skills and an understanding of the topics covered under the Graphic Communication cluster. Areas of instruction include: Black & White photography; film developing and printing; the use of the 35mm camera with a concentration on photographic composition. (It is recommended that the student have his/her own 35mm camera.) Desktop Publishing uses Page-Maker software and students also are trained using PhotoShop photo manipulation software, Illustrator drawing software, and Quark Xpress. Offset printing fundamentals and operation of small printing presses is also included in the curriculum. Screen printing fundamentals including design and printing of t-shirts & iron-on transfers further prepare the students for entry level work in the Graphic Arts field. Graduates of the program have enrolled in such post-secondary schools at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and other colleges where they have continued their education in design, graphic arts, and related fields.
