This occupation involves the feeding, watering and examination of small and large animals for signs of illness, disease or injury in laboratories, animal hospitals and clinics. Students will learn to disinfect cages and work areas, sterilize laboratory and surgical equipment, as well as groom, bathe, exercise, clip and trim animals' nails. They will keep records of feedings, treatments and animals received or discharged. They may clean, disinfect and repair cages, pens or fish tanks. Animal technicians are involved with work activities that include practical, hands-on problems and solutions. Major Topics of Study: First year: Students will learn basic animal health requirements and practice feeding, watering, grooming, bathing and restraint techniques. Students will be responsible for the care and general well-being of animals entrusted to them in cooperation with the Cattaraugus County SPCA and others. Students will learn about various mammal, reptile, bird and fish anatomies and physiologies. Second Year: Internships: Students will work for extended periods on location in field experience rotations (veterinary offices, and SPCA). Specialized Instruction: Students will learn advanced principals of animal health, dental care, identification of diseases and treatment of various injuries and afflictions, as well as how to administer various types of medication under the direction of a Veterinary or animal health care professional. Clinical: Students will witness various types of operations as available through internships at animal health care facilities and participate in post-operative care as required and available. Students will identify various types of parasites and learn preventative and curative measures to less their impact on animals. They also will set up and conduct laboratory testing of various samples. Career Opportunities: Veterinary Assistants and Animal Caretakers are employed by veterinary clinics, zoos, animal shelters, grooming facilities, pet stores and production agriculture.
