Mechanical Engineering from California Maritime Academy is a Campus Bachelor Mechanical Engineering degree that prepares you for a Engineering career. The Mechanical Engineering curriculum provides a sound background in basic sciences and mathematics, computer applications, design, laboratory experiences, communication, humanities, and social sciences. The curriculum requires a core of mechanical engineering courses in the energy and the mechanical stems, as well as a two-course capstone design experience starting in the fall of the senior year. Computer applications and design experiences are integrated into several required and stem-elective courses. Excellent facilities in circuits, instrumentation and measurements, electromechanical machinery, controls, materials/mechanical, manufacturing processes, and fluids/thermal laboratories further strengthen the instructional Mechanical Engineering program. Through selection of electives, students can choose to specialize in either the energy design stem or the mechanical design stem. U.S. Coast Guard License Option and Certified Plant Engineer-in-Training Option: Included in the Mechanical Engineering curriculum are courses that lead to either the U.S. Coast Guard license or the Certified Plant Engineer-In-Training certificate. While the purpose of these requirements is to produce a licensed merchant marine engineer or a certified plant engineer-in-training, the hands-on experience provides an added dimension of practical training beneficial to the application and understanding of mechanical engineering systems and the engineering design process. Students interested in pursuing the U.S. Coast Guard Third Assistant Engineer's license will participate in three sea training experiences of 60 days in length. Students interested in obtaining the Certified Plant Engineer-In-Training certificate will participate in one 60-day sea training experience and two co-op experiences that include working with industry for a 2-3 month period.
