Program Purpose The Master of Fine Arts in Production Design seeks to combine professional training in costume design and technology with scholarly studies in order to create skilled and knowledgeable artists and teachers who are models of integrity and inspiration. Students will receive a strong foundation in costume, theatre and world history, and critical studies. Built upon this foundation is a rigorous curriculum based on practical and theoretical skills in collaboration, design , construction and specialized technology. Expected Learning Outcomes Strong foundation in historical and theoretical inquiry: 1. Students will be able to evaluate theatrical productions as cultural and expressive art forms. 2. Students will be able to utilize appropriate research methods in the successful creation of production design. 3. Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of historical and theatrical constructs in design choices. 4. Students will be able to analyze the effectiveness and appropriateness of theatrical designs. Skills in design and technology for production: 1. Students will be able to collaborate effectively with other artists. 2. Students will be able to render clearly their design concepts. 3. Students will be able to employ selected techniques, such as millinery or painting & dyeing, into theatrical designs . Skills in teaching history, design and/or technology: 1.
