Persons with this certification may also teach students with disabilities such as autism or physical disabilities if the students' needs can be met. It is also worth knowing that Brescia special education majors who complete this program are not only certified in Learning and Behavior Disorders, but are also certified in one or more areas of regular education . Brescia graduates in special education now serve as regular, self-contained, and resource room teachers; social service workers specializing in service to persons with handicapping conditions; and as teacher consultants and administrators in the field of special education . The Special Education program is approved by the Kentucky State Department of Education and conforms to current certification guidelines. Students considering a degree in special education are advised that certification in two teaching areas (regular and special education) will require a program that exceeds the usual 128 credit hours necessary for graduation. Because it may not be possible to complete the program of studies in the traditional 8 semesters of undergraduate study, students may need to allow at least one extra semester and/or summer of study to complete the B.S. degree in special education .
