BU students specializing in the education of students with disabilities engage in a comprehensive course of study that includes a strong basis in the liberal arts, including course work in the humanities, social sciences and math and science, as well as in general education and special education . Students begin early in their course of study with part time placements in schools or agencies throughout the greater Boston area and continue to have hands-on experiences during most semesters of study. Early on students have opportunities to work directly with children and youth with disabilities while learning about the theoretical, conceptual, and empirical bases of the practices they are observing. While meeting program requirements students learn about children and youth with a disabilities that result in their need for specially designed instruction and related services. The Boston area provides a rich "laboratory" of opportunities for Boston University students to observe children and youth with a wide variety of handicapping conditions and participate in programs in schools and other community settings, both public and private, and inclusive and segregated. Boston University 's undergraduate program provides opportunities for student to specialize in the following areas which also include a focus on preparation that can lead to recommendation to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for teaching licenses in each of the following areas. Graduates may apply for reciprocity in other states if they choose to teach in states other than Massachusetts.
