The goal of the undergraduate program is to educate students to become early childhood and elementary bilingual classroom teachers or early childhood, elementary, middle, and secondary TESOL teachers. Students interested in becoming bilingual teachers at the middle and secondary levels should apply to a specialization program (such as science, math, etc.) and take a concentration in bilingual education . Candidates must acquire fluency in at least two languages (including English). The program includes a strong liberal arts component with emphasis on language and culture; courses in English language and literature; professional development courses combining theory and practice; and specialty development courses focusing on such themes as first- and second-language acquisition and teaching, models of bilingual education , multicultural education , and cross-cultural materials and curriculum development. The program has a field-extension component which offers students the opportunity to apply the theoretical concepts learned during their course work. Placements are made in collaboration with various public school systems either in the United States or abroad. The program also offers graduate work to prepare teachers, specialists, researchers, and teacher-trainers for entry into various educational fields, and to increase their understanding of bilingualism, bilingual /bicultural education , and the bilingual /bicultural individual.
