The entry-level Masters of Science degree in Clinical Athletic Training prepares students to function as health care providers in the areas of injury prevention, recognition, and treatment. The program follows a competency-based approach in preparing students to think conceptually and analytically. The entry-level graduate program is open to all students who have completed a Baccalaureate degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0 in a related field and who meet the admission criteria. This two-year MS degree program builds on the department's graduate exercise science program that has enrolled over 200 students in the past 10 years. The curriculum is designed for full-time students who will attend three semesters in the first year and two semesters in year two. A total of 48 credits is required for completion of the M.S. in Clinical Athletic Training. The professional preparation of an entry-level athletic trainer is directed toward developing specific competencies in risk management and injury prevention, pathology of injuries and illnesses, assessment and evaluation of injuries, acute care of injury and illness, pharmacology, therapeutic modalities, therapeutic exercise, general medical conditions and disabilities, nutritional aspects of injury and illness, psychosocial intervention and referral, health care administration, and professional development.
