Spanish Literature from Arizona State University at the Tempe Campus is a Campus Master Language degree that prepares you for a Liberal Arts career. This is a program in literature and criticism for students interested in teaching on the secondary and junior college levels, and it is especially suited for those who plan to continue for the Ph.D. in literature. This concentration includes a minimum of 30 semester hours of graduate level work as approved by the candidate's supervisory committee. The program must include SPA 500 Bibliography and Research Methods course (to be taken during the first year of graduate study), SPA 545 Concepts of Literary Criticism, and 6 semester hours of a combination of SPA 592 Research and SPA 599 Thesis. There are two areas (Peninsular and Spanish American) and four periods in which the student may choose to specialize: * Peninsular (Medieval and Golden Age) * Peninsular (from 18th Century to Present) * Spanish American (From Colonial to Modernism) * Spanish American (Independence to Present, including Mexican American) M.A. students must complete two courses in different genres in each area. Students with extensive previous studies in literature may substitute one or more core courses with electives after taking an examination for each exemption requested (no credit). Additional courses (nine hours) are elective and may be selected from any 500 or 600-level offerings (literature, culture or other core courses). All courses must be under the SPA denomination.
