Nursing Adult Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner from Allen College is a Campus Master Psychiatric Nurse degree that prepares you for a Nursing career. Allen College offers the Adult Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Track of the MSN program master's degree in response to the growing need for specialists who can provide comprehensive psychiatric-mental health nursing care to adults who are at risk for mental illness, as well as those who are in need of psychiatric services. The APMHNP Track, one of only two offered in the state of Iowa , has been developed in response to a well-documented, serious shortage of mental health practitioners in Iowa , especially psychiatrists, psychologists, and psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioners in Iowa . Graduates of the program are prepared to provide services in a range of settings, including hospital psychiatric units, emergency departments, community mental health centers and private practice settings. Graduates may also assume faculty positions in nursing schools experiencing a shortage of faculty with degrees in psychiatric-mental health nursing. Graduates will address the health care needs of patients with psychiatric disorders, including patients with substance abuse problems or physical medical conditions. Graduates will be taught advanced skills in: *Psychosocial and physical assessment and differential diagnosis of client conditions *Management of care over time *Symptom management and behavior change through therapy, education and medication management *Delivery of culturally competent care *Collaboration with families and other practitioners *Data-based client and program outcome evaluation *Client and family advocacy *Partnering with communities Allen College APMHNP graduates are eligible to be certified as adult psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners by passing an examination offered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center . Students enrolled in the APMHNP track of the MSN program will complete 15 semester hours of core coursework currently offered and required of all MSN students; 9 semester hours of core nurse practitioner coursework currently offered and required of all advanced practice nursing students; 17 semester hours of psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner coursework, which includes a minimum of 525 hours of clinical study; and a graduate project also required of all MSN students. The total number of credit hours for graduation would remain at 41. Post-masters certificate students will complete approximately 33 semesters hours of coursework, although some of this coursework may be challenged through examination. Post masters certificate students will also complete a minimum of 525 hours of clinical study. Students already holding a master's degree in nursing may elect to earn a second master's degree by completing a minimum of 24 semester hours of credit, including those courses required in the post-master's certificate.
