Astrophysics from Agnes Scott College is a Campus Bachelor Astronomy degree that prepares you for a Science career. Astrophysics is the study of the universe and all that it contains. Therefore, astronomers study phenomena in the solar system, at the distances of nearby stars, at the center of the Milky Way Galaxy and out to the distances of other galaxies millions of light-years away. At Agnes Scott, students are challenged to study astrophysics as more than a collection of facts, but as a vital discipline, accessible through observations made locally and with remote telescopes. You will have opportunities to explore the universe with solid theoretical training and the most up-to-date instrumentation—we have one of the largest telescopes in the Southeast. You will use a variety of high-tech astronomical equipment at Agnes Scott as you study the sky. The multi-million-dollar Bradley Observatory and Delafield Planetarium allows you to gain hands-on experience in both classroom and laboratory, an opportunity many large colleges and universities can’t offer. Students at Agnes Scott College have opportunities to use modern observing and image-processing equipment, both at the College’s on-campus Bradley Observatory and at national astronomy facilities. Through a concentration in astronomy, students acquire a general, flexible foundation for graduate study or professional work. What will I study? Courses in astrophysics focus on the solar system, stars, galaxies, cosmology and the physical processes that govern the evolution of the universe. Students learn fundamental observational techniques and explore topics such as radiation, dynamics and scientific computing. An advanced seminar is offered to juniors and seniors in the program, which includes use of on-line and other research resources, research methods, discussion of current literature and issues in scientific research. Astronomy students must also have a concrete knowledge of physics and mathematics. All classes are small in size, promoting a collaborative, dynamic environment.
